From Raker County.A correspondent of the Salem Rec^ord, who visited Baker City during tbe time of the late Ladies Fancy Fair, in aid of the Sister’s School, gives the following description of Baker county and the Fair.Baker Cxti, Oct., 187*.Mr. Editor: Sojourning for a brief time iii Baker Gotfnty perhaps u little chat concerning that part of the county might not be nniuterest-ing to many of your readers. From personal observation I am Convinced that. Eastern Oregon is destined to take a leading part in all affair* concerning this State. The mines are in active operation and Rye Yalley and Connor Creek are earnestly rewarding those whose enterprise and industry have developed that wonderful country. At Auburn I found things fjuietr but no complaint ofdull times. The hotel kept by Mr. and Mrs. Griffin is doing a good business, and the merchants look happy and care free.At Eldorado and Clarke Creek, » successful future is promised, the Eldorado ditch we are confident under tbe management of its prerent owners will be a decided success. At Baker City, times were unusually g:iy, owing uo doubt to tbe Ladies fancy Fair then being held there. We were surprised at theenergy and enterprise exhibited by the fair ladies of Baker, the articles for sale were beautiful and many of them realy elogant and costly, Mrs. J. W. Virtue was President of the Fair, and we congratulate the Catholic church at Baker in their selection of this lady for the position which she filled creditably to herself and to the Church, Mrs. Pack wood was treas^ urer, her lady like and genial roan* ner added many a dollar to the treasury. Mrs. JBowen, and Mrs. Cranston, of Sparta, most estimable ladies, used every exertion to make the Fair a success, and so far as we were concerned, we gave them our last dollar without a murmur. Among the ladies who are actively engaged, we noticd Miss. Nora Moss, of OregonCity. To those who know her it is unnecessary to say that her youth, beauty, and accomplishments were a decided feature in the entertainment, she was a bright star among thatbright constellation. The Fuir ctoaed with a concert Saturday evening, and we have rarely ever heard it excelled ic much larger cities. Particularly deserving of mention was Mrs. Miller, of Salt Lake City. Not often has it been o.ir good fortune to-listen to such sweet soul thrilling Melby. A duett sang by this lady and1 Mr. Dooti ey of Clarks^Creek—“Sonny Home” —was rendered iu a masterly manner and received golden applause. Judging by the “coins” which were showered upon the fair singer, who sang with greaf pathos and depth of feeling. She accompanied herself on the organ and looked sweet and graceful and truly womanly in » dress of black velvet with diamond ornaments in her hair We congratulate Baker county upon the acquisition of her society. Miss Moss received the applause of connoiseurs upon her tine execution upon piano. It was a ram treat and b^r ehar»»ot.er songs would do credit toS“Little Lottie.1 shefan inimitable actress, one we sincerely hope we may be fortunateenough to listen to again. She was dressed in red silk with white lac© overdress. The Dooley brothers were a concert in them selves, but, the character of the evening viras Mr. -Put Griffin in his Irish Recruit, which would be hard to pxcei. Well I’ve alread v occupied too much o4 yonr valuable spM6, *o will draw this letter to a cloe. Mibb Moss re-turned to Oregon City in company with Mr. and Mrs .J. W. Yirtue of Baker City, and while the penpJe of Baker must deeply deplore the lost* of her society, her numerous friends ofOregon City will rejoice to welcome her again among them. Au revoir.Wandeeeb*
