Mrs. Campbell was mistress of ceremonies for the annual event which drew an estimated 1,500 people to the mall area.(Times-\’ews/Tim Wilson)Tree-lighting draws estimated 1,500 downtownBy BILL DERLANTimes-News Writer CUMBERLAND — A crowd estimated at 1,500 by city police gathered on the Downtown Cumberland Mall Friday night for the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony.The electronic temperature display on the First National Bank of Maryland building showed a steady 61° as residents listened to brief comments from city officials and businessmen.Members of the Fort Hill High School Choir, under the direction of Robert Thompson, formed a procession and carried candles as they performed several Christmas songs upon their arrival at the Isiminger Town Center.“I have never seen this many people on the downtown mall for a tree-lighting ceremony,” said Mistress of Ceremonies and City Councilwoman Dellann Campbell. “Thanks for coming.”“I want to wish you all the best holiday season,” said Lee Schwartz, chairman of the Downtown Development Commission.
