Fis/i and field reportCold water is threatBy RICK HENNINGEREach year too many sportsmen die from drowning in Ohio lakes, rivers and streams. Most drownings take place in early spring or late fall at a time when hunting and fishing activities are at their peak and water temperatures are cold. Most of them result from capsizing or falling out of a small boat.Cold water is a leading killer among hunters and fishermen alike. Many drowning victims do not drown at all, they die from cold. In cold water; the body loses vital heat 30 times faster than in air! Life expectancy in 33-40 degree water can be reduced to L5 minutes whenwearing a life preserver and it’s even less without. Remember, a life preserver or a cushion is no good ifyou can’t reach it in an emergency. Therefore, on rough water or fast moving rivers and streams and on cold water, life jackets should be worn at all times.Cold water survival: the body loses the greatest amount of heat in the areas of the groin, the armpits, the neck and head areas. These areas require the most protection in cold water. Next to the wet suit, wool clothing offers the best insulation in cold water. Exercise such as swimming or treading water causes the body to lose heat much faster than remaining still in the water, use a life jacket to remain afloat and stay as still as possible, protecting the heat lessareas.A critical choice: for years people have been taught to stay with an overturned boat, it will keep you afloat. In cold water, if rescaers are not nearby, you might be faced with a critical choice, to stay with the boat and risk the cold or swim for shore. Few peoplecan swim a mile under these conditions. A hunting or fishing party with more than one boat increases the chance for rescue. So, whether you’re after ducksand geese or just fishing for late season perch or steelhead remember to take the necessary precautions so that you won’t become a statistic.Deer hunting in this area is starting to pick up for some local bow hunters. The rut is in full swing and deer may be seen moving at any hour of the day Don’t forget to sign up for the WNIO Big Bucks Contest sponsored by Ohio Gun and Cycle. Nothing to buy, just go in Ohio Gun and sign up. Good luck, Good Angling and Safe Hunting!chickenSEE AO H COUPONS PAGE 12
