Romanenko’s 10th Anniversary With Symphony HonoredBy GEORGE DOTY The 48th season of the Greenville Symphony and Ivan •Romanenko's 10th season as its music director and conductor opened with Saturday’s concert at the William A. Passavant Memorial Center on the Thiel College campus Mrs, Harry W Pedicord, Symphony Society president, gave Maestro Romanenko a plaque and anniversary cake marking his 10th season. Lillian Mehr, assistant concertmaster, presented a baton, a gift of the orchestra, with their hope thatlong may you wave!”I have heard eight of Maestro Romanenko's nine past seasons with the Greenville orchestra; this first concert of his 10th — as did many of the others — mixed small disappointments with large pleasures and impressed all of us with its new evidence of the excellent progress he and the orchestra have achieved together in his nine years here Donald W Byo, director of the Dana School of Music of Youngstown State University, was guest conductor, leading the orchestra in the first half of Saturday's concert Professor Byo followed the National Anthem with Mozart’s Overture to his comic opera in German, Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail” (‘The Abduction from the Seraglio”), commissioned by Emperor Joseph II in 1782 The overture is a familiar and always-enjoyable work, and Byo and the orchestra gave it a solid, well paced performance Romanenko was soloist for Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto in G minor”, a beautiful, romanticKiece performed first in 1868 lueh of the beauty came through, some did not Romanenko the violinist seemed at times to want to conduct as well, if he had concentrated more consistently on his violin playing his performance, and Byo’s and the orchestra’s, would have been much better As it was, the result was moving at timet but fell short of the capabilities of all concerned When Romanenko conductedTschaikovsky’s “Symphony No 4 in F minor,” he did a superb job of music making, as did the orchestra There were more than the usual number of distractions, including jarringly-wrong notes from a trumpet and an unaccountably-untuned tympanum. But what the hey; the Panthers’ fumbles are soon forgot if they make it into the end zone often enough If community league orchestras got invitations to play in bowls, Greenville's would deserve one of the invitations.Ms. Natalie Biller, principal oboe, was outstanding, as in the introduction to the symphony's second movement, “Andan* tino.” All the horns were ex*cellent, as were the woodwindsin general and nearly every violin, viola, and cello The entire orchestra played with a sincere interest in theuninhibited emotionsTschaikovsky shares with them and with us throughout The string sections were especially See Honored.
