COUNTY RECORDER SAWLARGE ELK ALONG ROADA. R. Anderson, MeKean county recorder of deeds, who commutes daily hy automobile between his home inClermont and Smethporfc encountereda large elk while coming down the Red Mill brook road above Colegrove one morning recently.The elk, which leisurely sauntered across the highway a short distance ahead of the county official's car, possessed a huge spread of antlers.The State restocked the forests of neighboring Elk county with elk several years ago and the animals have been multiplying at a gratifying rate. The elk. ipreapparently. now * coming over the line into McKean county for-1 ests. IOther residents of the Red Mill and Norwich regions have seen this bull elk and a female follower, indicating that at least one pair of elk and possibly more are making McKean county forests their stamping ground.Mr. Anderson informs the Derno- j crat that the sight of deer browsing j in a wheat held of his Clermont farm is almost a daily one.Speaking of the tameness of doe deer which the State will allow hunters to slaughter this year, the popular county official stated that one day recently he and his son, and a young companion experimented on how near it would be possible to get to three does which were grazing in his wheat field.As they walked slowly towards the three deer Mr. Anderson spoke reassuringly to the animals which aside from raising their heads and looking inquiringly in the direction of the slowly approaching party, showed no signs of fear despite the fact that a neighbor's dog was barking savagely. Mr. Anderson stated that the animals presented a beautiful sight and he and the two boys succedcd in approaching to within a few feet of the three deer, which sauntered off slowly ahead of the advancing human beings without showing a particle of panic,
