The indictment charges violation of Section 2139 of the federal statutes and charges rape.Incidentally, Joe Boyd may have to answer to a charge of murder and| after all that he may have to make; personal explanation to William Davenport, a Tama Indian, as to why he took Davenport's squaw and papooB©, leaving Davenport heartbroken. Mrs. Davenport went home last night, accompanying her lover and the deputy United States marshal to this city.Out at the Cherokee reservation in North Carolina there is another squaw and a bunch of papooses whom Boyd is alleged to have deserted after he committed the murder.Joe Boyd waB a handsome chap, and when he landed at the Tama reservation last spring from the Cherokee reservation, posing as a single buek, ho became immensely popular. The squaws liked the broad shoulders and the tall, straight form of the stranger.He wooed a half dozen or so of the squaws. He might have had his pick of them. But he had his eye on the buxom wife of William Davenport., and whispered honeyed phrases fn her ears. She was tempted and fell. Boyd assaulted another squaw on the reservation and then, taking Mrs. Davenport and her 6-year-old papoose, disappeared.At the last term of the federal court William Davenport and some more of the Indians came to thiscity and had Boyd Indicted. He was located several weeks ago and Deputy United States Marshal M. L. Healy was notified. He sent a copy of the indictment and a bench war-rent to Sterling. III., and Boyd was arrested and brought back here by Deputy United States Marshal Hanke.While the -search was being made for Boyd it was discovered that he had a wife and papoose back in North Carolina and was also wanted for murder.
