INursing StudntsLast Thursday night at St. James hospital, 26 Prairie State college second-year nursing students received their blue-striped cap signifying their having reached what President Richard W. Hostrop called “a halfway house on the road to their career goals as registered nurses.”Miss Phyllis Welnetz, director of nursing services, bestowedthe caps, and staff member Mrs. Jean Cunat conducted the nursing profession’s traditional torch-lighting ritual which followed. The colorful recognition ceremony was emceed by Nello Petersanti, dean of occupational'Sing-ln 68' Setservices.The keynote address, “Nursing — Past, Present, and Future,” was delivered by Mrs. Gunhild McAllister, past president of the 20th district IllinoisNurses association.* * *POINTING to the many changes in nursing education that have occurred during the past quarter-century, Mrs. McAllister stressed the community college role in streamlining the training period in terms of time and essentials taught.The two-year nursing program now available at the community college level is of special significance in alleviating the urgentnationwide shortage of registered nurses. By 1970, she said, less than two years away, 800,000 will be required to meet the nation's health needs.Highlighting t h e evening’s ceremonies were the scholarship awards to 13 freshman and 16 sophomore nursing students made by Dr. Paul Ashley, president of the board of directors of the Nursing School Scholarship foundation.
