The rope used to raise the flag jammed on a pulley when the standard was half-way up the pole.By MARY ANNE CROWE Herald-Times-Reporter Staff WriterThis man is, above all, an entertainer. He has the distinguishing completeness of personality and talent which sets him apart as a professional.Frankie Avalon, appearing at Carlton-on-the-Lake, Two Rivers, in his first show Monday evening, surprised, charmed and endeared himself to his audience, who gave him two standing ovations and would just as soon have stayed for the next show.• Avalon’s talent runs the spectrum.Wipe from your, mind the image of the “Beach Parties” kid. This is no kid gyrating with a microphone and a case of aderoids. As Avalon himself quipped, “Did you expect me to walk out here with a surfboard and Annette Funicello?”The show is varied and delightful. It is not geared to former pony tails and felt skirts nor to any particular group. Avalon has learned and grown and developed with his talent, which is why he is not among the ranks of faded teen kings. He is-.a singer, a mime, an actor ami a musician, all in his own right and all done withhedonistic drive.Avalon’s versatility, ease, talent and the rapport shown with Ben Arden and Arden’s excellent orchestra, all were combined to deliver a show worthy of the label “Entertainment.”Sure of himself and what he is doing, Avalon smoothly controls the atmosphere of his repertoire, and obviously loves it. You are as delighted with his medley of late 50s hits as with the soft and slow and exciting pulse of “The Beat Goes On.” He has a bold and refreshing sense of humor, a necessity for a father of eight children, and he uses it freely. The audience likes it.Even more of a delight to one particular female member of the audience, was a “Romance Scene” with Avalon, done on stage. It is an excellent show and you will enjoy it.The waitresses at the Carlton, deserve a paragraph to themselves. The service was prompt, the women were courteous and helpful, despite the volume of people they had to serve.Again, though, there was the “sardine problem” at the tables, with about a three-inch overlap on your neighbor on either side. The annoyance of that faded, thanks to the show.DEARHUNTERS INSURANCEA*#*?**Heart attack coverage available.
