Fred SonnenST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -Fred Sonnen, former “world champion” harmonica player, died Saturday, Nov. 14, at the age of 71.Mr. Sonnen was the husband of the former Ruth E. Coffey, who survives, with a stepdaughter, Mrs. Russell (Arleen James) Cryder, of Belmont, Calif.He died following surgery, after a short illness.Mr. Sonnen was a retired music supervisor in the St. Petersburg recreation department, where, from the 1950’s, he had taught hundreds of children to play the harmonica. He later also taught adults in several community centers.Before going to St. Petersburg 18 years ago, from Cape Cod, he had played before many notables, and had directed harmonica bands, ranging in membership up to 1,000. He was a featured cellist with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.Mr. Sonnen and his wife lived at 3565-58th Ave., N. St. Petersburg. He was a native of Dusseldorf, Germany.A Fred Sonnen Children’s Music Fund, in care of the St. Petersburg Public Library, has been set up in his memory.
