Reflections*By Dorothy TaylorHeading down Memory Lane was a must at the recent celebration of Veteran’s Day held at the high school football stadium. It was a neat happening to watch and be a part of all the action, especially the visit from the helicopter. Capt. Fiore was in charge and the ROTC Cadets were color bearers while the Band played military music. Theresa Clay sang “The National Anthem” beautifully as did Amy Browning who sang “America the Beautiful”. Rev. Wayne Walther did the prayer of Invocation and Michael , Lewis, Student Council President, spoke about “What Veteran’s Day Means to Me”. It was Capt. Fiore who introduced the dignitaries present and Judge Wright who spoke along with Charles Red the Principal of the high school. And then, a tribute was given to Thomas Holland who had spent time in one of those POW camps and was identified as a realhero. Judge Blomerth gavea patriotic speech and theILockhart police did a rifle salute. Schmidt and Hawkins rang out with “Amazing Grace” on Bagpipes and “Taps” was carried out by Brian Gutierrez. The final music was performed by the elementary pupils present for the occasion from Clear Fork and Navarro Schools. They added to the presentation their rendition of “God Bless America.”As the helicopter “did its thing” I thought about all the rescues that had taken place and carried out by the helicopter. I’m certain that delight and relief had takenplace when persons needing help felt its presence. It was a reminder to all of us that wars can be and are ugly, torturous, life changing, and provides us the most frightening experiences ever. Even though the Bible declares that there’ll continually be wars and rumors of wars doesn’t make wars necessarily an acceptable item. All the Lord wanted us to do was follow Him and love all others. That isn’t asking a lot from all of us humans. As you know I was a “kid” during WW II and Camp Howze changed life around Cooke County forever. Friends had farm land that was bought by the U.S.Military for the construction of the Camp. Friends moved away to other places and we neversaw some of them again. Soldiers who brought their families lived in make-shift apartments just to be together and they spent lots of time and money as they crowded into the streets, movie houses and stores in Gainesville. The hardest and most difficult situation was learning about those who served and fought and came home prepared for burial. They could never sit in a special chair during a Veteran’s Day celebration but they would be forever remembered. There’ll always be a great love in my heart for all Veterans. It was indeeda thrill to be part of the Veteran’s Day Celebration.Prov. 17:17 “A friend loveth at all times and a brother is born foradversity.”tfead to Toe FashionsCfotfiing, Sfioes ancCAccessories for AITCacfies Juniors, Misses (Pfus sizesI*mTad Fashionsiv •;mmBusiness Odours:10 - 6:30Tues- Friday10-4 Saturday116 !E.
