Nelms Jr. is .suffering from* severe lacerations about the head, all as a result of a hear]-on collision,whieh occurred S;ituvday rdf'ht about 0 o’clock, right- at the crest of the overpass bridge on North Madison street. Both of the injured men are residents of Meigs.Report:; from the hospital this Morning were to the effect that I’leetwood has never regained consciousness and his condition is considered very critical. Madison street, city, crashed into a Ford coupe, 1939 Model, in which Messrs. Fleetwood and Nelms were driving towards .Thomasville.According to the officers, who investigated the accident, Fleetwood and Nelms were on the south side of the overpass bridge en route to Thomasville, and when just at the crest of the bridge, the car driven by; McNeil going in the opposite direction, left the north ride and attempted to go arouna another car just ahead of him. In so doing* he crashed directly into the . car driven by the Meigs men.Men Injured As Cars Were DemolishedThe impact was a severe one and the cars were practically demolished,, the Ford being driven back under the cowl. In the crash Fleetwood received a severe gash hr the head and was otherwise crushed and injured. Nelms never lost consciousness and was able to talk with members of the families of the. injured men who arrived shortly after the accident.The negro driver of the other car received an injury to his knee and minor injuries about the body, but he was not thought to be badly hurt, and another negro,Eugene B. Franklin, who is said to have been riding with 2iim, is said not to have been hurt.Negro Driver Drinking,Officers Assert. The McNeil negro is said by the officers to have admitted that shortly before the wreck he and his companion, Franklin, had-consumed a pint of wine. It is stated also they had another ’ quart of wine in their car which had notbeen opened.ftfeigs Men Well KnownBoth of the injured men are well known in Meigs and vicinity, both being connected with the Nelms Lumber Company there, of which Mr. J. W. Nelms Sr. has been owner and operator for many years. Both the injured men are married.
