Bruce, Laing, West Milwaukee concert, knock-down-drag-out electronic battleby Mike LysterCream’* and Mountain” are two memorable bands In popular music. Both are defunct now. Why they dissolved is uncertain to m«t at us. The memories and a couple discs apiece are all that remains. Jack Bruce (Cream). Leslie West (Mountain), ami Corky Laing (Mountain) worked up an act and are now touring the United States on the advance at ttieir Columbia release Why Dontcha!”.The trio performed in Milwaukee Wednesday, Oct. 18 and 1 took It upon myself to attend the concert. The 1st group on the bill at fare came across with the sound uf an overelectrified heap of garbage. I was unable to find out who that bunch at tone deaf rascals were. It doesn'treally matter. This concert had a historic significance for me liecause 1 had never seen Jack Bruco perforin. When West, Bruce, andLaingap-peared on stage, the audience welcomed them with enthusiastic applause.Tliose expectations -were soon shattered by the brashlest wave of sound since West and Bruce jammed it up a bit with a medley of Cream” and Mountain” songs, while the declbte level rote beyond tolerable limits. Laing was the only one of the three who exercised any feel for the dynamics lt;rf the music.Leslie ami Jack created a real knock-down-drag-out electronic battle with the audience as the loser. The real nerve grinder was the fact that they only played a one-hour set. It seemed as If they were just starting to loosen up. The audience (a very typical one for Milwaukee) didn’t know what to do when the band refused to play an encore. The promoter told the crowd to clear the buildirginatone which sounded like that.of a pimp, who not only ripped off your money, but your clothes as well. This group will never he anything close to Cream” nr oven Mountain” for there is an insensitive element present In their performance. They make noise, not music. This was defloately a four aspirin concert.Their album Why Dontcha (Columbia 31929) conforms madly to the hard line lt;i hard-rock. The words to the songs are a shade easier to understand on the album than at the concort but sound like the mumbled mutterings of a wounded waterbuf/alo. This will probably be a favorite among acid rocknr* and will be heard blaring from a smoke-filled dorm room just before supper. Wise up! Not even this kind of appetizer can prevent indigestion ala' the food service. Why Dontcha” try something else? This Friday at 5:30 on WRST-Fm The Patch Panel will feature West, Bruce, and Laing along with rare soundsofthe 1968Milwaukee Hock Festival.
