By Eddie FitzgeraldDaily Times Staff WriterBLACK CREEK — Main Street here Saturday was filled with people and the sounds of gospel and country- music as the first Heritage Day finally got underway.After months of planning and delays, residents and visitors gathered under warm, blue skies to sample tasty foods or view numerous crafts.Town commissioners planned the all-dav event back in September to raise money for the community building and town sponsored programs to be held in it, but Hurricane Floyd caused them to can-cel at the last momentTo one observer, it looked like more people attended Heritage Day than live in Black Creek. Beautiful weather contributed to the success of the day.Heritage Day started off with breakfast biscuits at 7 a.m., and at 9 a.m., Mayor Ralph Smith welcomed everyone. Programs continued until about 4 p.m.“It was a beautiful day with big crowds, lots of vendors and a lot of entertainment,” Smith said this morning.Smith visited most of the booths in town and everyone seemed pleased, hesaid. 4“I didn’t see anvone who seemed dis-isatisfied or had a negative comment,” Smith said. “Most of them said they would be back w-hen we have it again.“This was good for the community because we had community involvement... We tried to provide something for every person, and I think we did that.”Janie Aycock. town clerk, said on Saturday the town collected more than $5,200 from the event. But a final figure is still being worked out.“We had a real excellent turn out,” she said. “The weather was gorgeous. You couldn’t have asked for better weather. People came and stayed awhile because of the good weather. ”One of the comments Mrs. Aycock overheard during the day was how- the event was such a good morale booster following the hurricanes.Events inside the new Black Creek Community Building included a cake w-alk, a turkey walk and bingo. Local students held a martial arts demonstrationoutside.Other entertainment included doggers. Bollen Creek Bluegrass Band, Steve Vann and karaoke singing, singer Russ Varnell and an Elvis impersonator. Cocoa the Clow-n also performed magic throughout the day, and 10 youngsters competed in a Little Mr. and Miss Black Creek pageant.
