Casco Bay fare increaseBy The Associated PressPassenger fares on Casco Bay Lines ferries will increase immediately for service between Portland and four islands, but the higher rates will not apply to groceries, the Public Utilities Commission said Monday.The PUC approved an overall annual revenue increase of 7.44 percent for the ferry service, with a 10 percent hike on passenger fares during the summer months.Last February, Casco Bay Lines asked the PUC for a 17 percent increase in its revenue. It was granted a temporary 10 percent fare hike last summer, which expired on Sept. 30.Under the new rates, the oneway fare from Portland will increase from $2.75 to $3 to Cliff Island; from $1 40 to $1.45 to Peaks Island; from $1.65 to $1.85 to Great Diamond Island; and from $1.80 to $2 to Long Island.There will be no immediate hike in the $2.60 one-way ticket to Chebeague Island or in the $1.60 ticket to Little Diamond Island.However, all passenger rates will increase 10 percent in the summer, during the height of the tourist season.There is a 20 percent discount for the purchase of a roundtrip ticket. Persons holding commuter tickets receive a 40 percent discount and children’s tickets are half price.The PUC exempted groceries and foodstuffs from any increase in freight charges. But beer, wine and cigarettes are not included in the exemption.
