Lujan wrestles with proposalof raising scholarship moneyALBUQUERQUE (AP) — New Mexico congressman Manuel Lujan is the unlikely promoter of wrestlemania in the state.Lujan heads the Endowment for Excellence in Education, which is aimed at raising money for scholarships. The group plans to use wrestlemania in a way it might not have been used before; to raise money for scholarships.' To that end, the endowment has scheduled a pro wrestling card Dec. 5 at the Albuquerque Civic Auditorium.Lujan, R-N.M., wants to raise $500,000 to provide one scholarship for each high school in the 1st Congressional District for a student to attend the University of New Mexico, the College of Santa Fe or the University of Albuquerque. High schools, not the endowment, will select the students.Lujan said the idea for the wrestling card came to him —literally.“A pro wrestler — I can’t remember his name now — came into my office (in Washington, D.C.) with a mutual friend,” Lujan said. ”1 asked him how I could use wrestling for the benefit of the scholarship fund and we came up with the idea of the show.”The wrestler put him in touch with promoter Verne Gagne. Gagne’s group, Pro Wrestling USA, agreed to the card. The plan is being helped by two promoting veterans, Belen auto dealer Casey Luna and Bob ‘‘Tooter” Dean, a pro wrestler himself. The proposal is a non-partisan effort and Lujan said only the wrestlers will get paid. Everyone else is a volunteer.c%1
