They didn’t get there on exactly the schedule they had intended Here is their story of why not:Having taken a few skids on slick roads late that afternoon, they decided to check road conditions ahead before continuing north, and were directed to the county sheriff's office in the courthouse complex.'The three women, road maps clutched prominently in their hands, approached the sheriff’s office and met Deputy Orlando Martinez, who was on his way out of the building. They asked the deputy for the best route to Colorado Springs, they related.According to the women, Martinez said. '■I’ll take you to somebody who can help you ” He led them into the office andthrough a few corridors, ami into a room Then he closed the door behind the women and apparently left the building The women, June Briggs and Phyllis Kumorowski of Colorado Springs, and Mrs. Briggs' mother Hose Beale, from England, found themselves in a room w ith an unidentified man Still clutching their ruad atlases, they asked the man in the room for directions to Colorado Springs, and he most helpfully and courteously replied As they chatted about this and that, the women began to notice items in that room that made it look like something other than an ordinary office: for example, a bed and a box of cookies.It gradually dawned on them that they were in jailWhen, after about 15 minutes.
