OVER SIXTY JOIN ELKS LODGE HERE——■ i «Over sixty candidates, comprising one of the largest classes ever admitted to the Elks fraternity innorthern Wisconsin, were initiatedinto Rhinelander lodge No. 598, Monday afternoon. Members of the antlered herd from many neighboring cities assembled here to attend the ceremonies.Preceding the initiation, which took place in the Elks* newly remod t led home on Davenport street, near-l\ four hundred Elks and candidates oaraded through the business section of the city, headed by the Oconto Elks’ band. With high hats andcanes the marchers made rather anifty appearance, reminding one of the old time minstrel para 'e«. in Rhinelander years back.Members of the Anligo lodge dr gree team had charge of the initiation, ushering the candidates throughthe various paces of Elkdom. At the | completion of the work a banquet was served in the Guild hall by' the ladies of St. Augustine’s Guild. Judge John Karel lt;familiarly’ known as“Ikev” Karel) of Milwaukee; Carl%Riggins. Oconto, president of thei Wisconsin Elks’ association; T. II.| Uhinehart. exalted ruler of the An-■ tigo lodge; Herbert Goldberg, exalt-ed ruler of Rhinelander lodge, and Attorney A. J. O’Meliu were the » *quel speakers. Mr. O'Melia acted as toastmaster and Mr, Goldberg gave the address of welcome. AU the talks were appropriate to the oecas-j ion and applause was frequent. Judge Karel, who is one of the (test known Elks in the northwest,1 had many personal friends among his hearers. He was the principal speaker of the evening and gave a 1 splendid address. Judge Karel will be remembered as a one time detno-j rratic candidate for governor.
