When within about three miles of Rising Run the big Memphis packet James W. GatT ran into the circus boat, striking near the centre, and caused her to sink in deep water in a short time. The Gaff picked up the entire party, except two canvass-men, who are supposed to have been lost. Dick Harrell, of this city, shipped as a deck hand, and for a time it was thought he was drownel, but he turned up all right, havingjumped off the boat and walked to shore. The Captain of the Gaff says it was five minutes after one o’clock when they were signalled by the Mountain Girl. The horses were very fine, aud one of them, “Comet,’” almost had the intelligence of a human being. The circus people will lose about $20,000. The cause of the accident will not bo known until it has been fully investigated officially. No blame is yetCj9 Vattached to either party. The regular pilot of the Girl was not at the wheel when the collision took place. Narrow escapes were experienced by the circus people.
