Wedding bells delayed, so Denise will stay — for awhileBy KEN GOTTLIEB C-T TV WriterDenise D’Aseenzo fans have been given a reprieve. They’ll have their favorite newscaster around for at least a few more months.WJW Channel 8 announced this week D’Aseenzo would not be leaving in December as originally planned but would stay through most of February.YOU’LL RECALL D’Aseenzo announced earlier this year she would be leaving in December to join her fiance back east and get married. Those plans are still on, but it seems the marriage isn’t going to take place until next summer. So D'Aseenzo and Channel 8 decided they might as well stay together a little while longer. The station, as it did when D’Aseenzo first announced she was leaving, gave no last day — or even week — saying only she would be here until late in the month.“IT WILL BE kind of beneficial both ways,” a station spokesman said.“As long as she was going to have to sit around waiting for summer, she figured she might as well do it here.”DENISE D’ASCENZOThe station will benefit by having D’Aseenzo on the air inFebruary, one of the three major ratings months.January is also a ratings month, although a less significant one.THE DELAY also gives Channel 8 more time to search for a replacement for D’Aseenzo. At last word, the field was being narrowed, with four of thestation’s own news people — Loree Vick, Marilou Johanek, Robin Phillips, and Sandy Lesko — still in the running. If someone from outside the station is brought in, the extra time could be used to give the newcomer some exposure as a reporter or afternoon anchor.D’Aseenzo has indicated she would like to continue working after getting married, but apparently hasn’t lined up a new job yet.WHEN AND if she does, it is expected to be in Connecticut. Her current contract with Channel 8 expires next month. The station spokesman declined to comment on the arrangement under which D’Aseenzo will continue working.Station officials seem to be playing down the significance of the situation, indicating there is no chance D’Aseenzo will change her mind about leaving town. But only about a year ago a similar situation occurred with WMJI Radio announcers Kim Scott and Dan Deely, who were husband and wife at the time.SCOTT AND Deely were absolutely, positively going to Louisville — all the arrangements had been made and WMJITV newsShannon Jewell, editorwas looking around for replacements. But of course it didn’t turn out that way.Scott and Deely can still be found at WMJI today. They never left, signing new contracts instead.D’Aseenzo, though, doesn’t seem the type to engage in such maneuvers.* * *SIGN ON (DOTTED LINE) -The leading members of WERERadio’s early-morning team — host Bob Fuller and news anchor Bob Tayek — have signed what the station calls “long-term” contracts to continue in their respective roles.Contract details were not disclosed. The signings come on the heels of WERE’s strong showing in the morning during the latest rating period. In fact, mornings were the only time WERE beat out its chief competitor, WWWE.APPARENTLY, station officials want to make sure they can at least maintain that edge.Fuller is a 25-year veteran of radio and TV in northeast Ohio and co-founder of the Akron Press Club.Tayek, who once worked at WZLE-FM in Sheffield Township, has been at WERE since 1981 and been news director since 1983.* * *CHANGING WEATHER — WEWS Channel 5 has hired a new weather forecaster to fill the opening created when Daniel Maly was promoted from weekend to weeknight weatherman.Marie Michelini will hit the airwayes later this month. She worked previously at cable TV’s Weather Channel.
