WLRO loses bid for station♦After five years of fighting appeals and reviews, it appears Lake Erie Broadcasting Co. will soon begin operating an FM radio station in Lorain.Lake Erie secretary Adrian Betleski said the Federal Communications Commission Wednesday denied a request from Lorain Community Broadcasting Co. to review its decision to grant a license and tower construction permit to Lake . Erie. Lorain Community Broadcasting, the operator of Lorain radio station WLRO, applied for the license at the same time as Lake Erie, in 1969. but was turned down by the FCC.The company appealed the decision to an FCC review board in 1972. but the ruling was upheld in November of 1973.LORAIN COMMUNITY again appealed, but the FCC denied the request Wednesday.Any further appeal would have to be filed in federal court, Betleski said. But Lorain Community stockholder Austin 0‘Toole said the company will not pursue the case any longer.Harold Sens, Lake Erie president and general manager of radio station WLEC in Sandusky, said he hopes the new station, broadcasting at 104.9 on the FM dial, will go on the air within six months.Lake Erie will construct its tower on Dunton Road near the Sheffield Shopping Center. A site for studios has not yet been determined. The station s programming will include local council meetings and high school sporting events.
