Impregnable Sailor defense keys 17-0 win over FairviewBy ED FARRELL Record-Argus Sports Editor GUYS MILLS — Bernie Davis thought that leading the Lakeview High School football team to its initial outright French Creek Valley Conference championship in his first season as head coach was thrilling.However, that accomplishment paled by comparison to his Sailors’ 17-0 District 10 Division II semifinal playoff game victory over Fairview Friday night at Maplewood High School.Davis’ Sailors (8-1) earned the right to meet Reynolds, a 30-21 win ner over defending D-10 Division II titlist Northwestern Friday night, for the 1986 District title at a site and time to be announced “The defense? I’m proud of ’em That was a great offensive team — I thought that team (Fairview) could explode at any time — but we just completely shut them down,’’ Davis said after his club limited the Tigers to 160 total yards and forced five Fairview turnovers.“We played defense exactly the way it was meant to be played,” Davis continued, adding, “Tom Miles, my assistant, had the kids prepared and they were really psyched up... ”So dominant was the Lakeview defense Fairview did not penetrate into Sailor territory during the entire second half, attempting only 24 offensive plays, four of which resulted in turnovers.Fairview’s only serious scoring bid occurred on its second offensive series of the contest, beginning at the outset of the second stanza The Tigers — highlighted by a 37-yard launt by sophomore tailback Chris Konieczny via a shovel pass from?|uarterback Scott Lane - moved rom their own 19-yard line to the Lakeview 16, before a holding penalty interrupted the drive. On the subsequent play, Beith, from the left hashmark, arched his field goal, hooking it around the right upright.“That field goal was a big one,” Davis asserted, adding, “It definitely gave us a psychological advantage Bill (Beith) has a good leg He’s very accurate He’s a good kicker.” The first of two Beitn interceptions and his subsequent 26-yard returnprovided the Sailors with a first-and-goal from the Fairview 9-yard line with 4:48 remaining in the third period. Four plays later, aided by a personal foul penalty against the Tigers, senior tailback Rodney Wright scored from two yards out at the 3:27 juncture and Beith added the conversion for a 10-0 Lakeview lead.Fairview (9-2) advanced from its own 29-yard line to the 49 in a half-dozen plays before Matt Schiefferle dropped back to punt on the first play of the final period. However Scnief-ferle, on a fourth-and-six play, passed to Tim Best for eight yards and a first down at the Lakeview 43. Two plays and a holding penalty against Fairview later, Campbell intercepted Lane for a second time to thwart the Tiger drive.Lakeview senior tackle George Egger and Tiger senior end Rick Borgeson exchanged fumble recoveries at the 7:55 and 6:25 marks of the fourth quarter, but Lakeview regained possession on downs with 4:51 remaining when Lane’s fourth-and-nine pass from the 37 fell incompleteWith Wright and junior running back Neal Bromley alternating carries, the Sailors moved the distance in eight plays, culminating in Wright’s 10-yard burst off right tackle with 1:27 remaining in the game.I’ve never seen a high school offensive line come off the ball like our’s did tonight,” Davis praisedThe Lakeview mentor later added, “I couldn’t be prouder of this group ... I felt we had the athletes to do this type of thing. Watts recorded the game’s lone quarterback sack when he trapped Lane for a 9-yard first-period loss
