Three Whitman College musical organizations will be featured in a free concert Thursday at 8 p.m. in Cordiner Hall.Composer Paul Creston will be the guest conductor for part of the program, which will feature a number of his works.The concert opens with “Choraleand Toccata” played by organist Stanley Plummer of the college music faculty.Also appearing will be the college chamber orchestra direceted by Jose Rambaldi; the choir, directed by Kenneth Schilling; and the symphonic band, directed by K. ThomasGainacopulos.Creston works on the program include a Gregorian chant for string orchestra; “Kalevala,” a fantasy on Finnish folksongs, and “Celebration Overture,” both for band.The choir will sing Creston’s “Dedication,” with Blaine Newland and Mike Alger as soloists, and “The Lambs to the I^unbs.”Creston also will present a public lecture on “The RhjHhmic Structure of Music” at 8 p.m. Wednesday in MacDowell Hall, Hall of Music, Park and Boyer streets.Born in New York in 1906 of Italianparentage, Creston began to writemusic at the age of 8. He wavered between literature and music as a life work until the age of 26, when “Opus 1 — Five Dances” for piano marked the beginning of a highly prolific musical career.Completely self-taught in harmony,counterpoint, orchestration andcomposition, Creston lias composed more than 100 major works for choral and instrumental groups of all sizes and instrumentation. His concertos have focused on the so-called “neglected” instruments, such as the saxophone, trombone, harp and accordion. His concertino formarimba and orchestra was the first large-forrn composition ever writtenfor the instrument.He has been commissioned to do numerous compositions for orchestras, arts societies and foundations.Among his awards have been the Music Critics’ Circle Award, the American Academy of Arts and Letters music award, two Guggenheim Fellowships and first prize in the 1952 Paris International Referendum for his First Symphony.In 1960 he represented the U.S. State Department in Israel and Turkey.
