East of Hebbronville, prominent South Texasranchers and breeders of fine quarter horses, had hermother as her nearest competitor.Showing superb horsemanship, -the youthful rider, handled the cattle with the ease of a veteran cowhand and her mount displayed all the finest qualities of which the quarter horse is renowned, understanding of cattle, speed, style and endurance. It was a picture to see the small, slim rider and her horse work in perfect accord and rhythm. They found that in addition to the thrills, the dangers, the skills involved, the rodeo could be made a beautiful spectacle, and. too, comedy could be injected in just the right measure to relieve the tension of danger-thrilled nerves.beeville came to town in a big way. The sister cow-town to the north furnished an opening night spectacle that left the audience waiting for next year's show. Heard Heard of Refugio and j Beeville were second only to RockyReagan in the contribution to the 1 show. Long and Short Tom were in every grand entry, and their pick-up men turned in a job that won as much admiration from the horsemen as did the riding and roping of the professionals.The Heard boys pet act, “Hitler and Mussolini going thru Africa on a Brahma bull,” brought grief to one of the colored cow-boys whotook the Hitler role. James Sutton fell from his backward perch on the bull’s hump and received a broken leg when the brute trampled him. That was Thursday. and the next night the act went on with a colored puncher impersonating Stalin and sitting on the bulls hump.Charley Shults. clown, and hisdaughter, Norma, trick rider androper, lived up to their advance notices in great style. The kids knew Charley, with his trick Ford, his trained burro and mule, as a typical rodeo clown the minute they saw him. But before the show was over, they saw him do deeds of skill and daring aplenty and he was a hero as well as a clown.Another entertainer who won the applause of the crowd was an East Texas lad. Harry Gambrill, of San Gabriel. His act which showed a trained steer and a horse doing a circus act together would be a hit in any town, but down here where folks know cow-brutes, that stunt of making a steer “bulldog himself was a knock-out.Little Mark Meyers and his trained Shetland, in the Thursdaplace was won by the entry of John J. O'Biien, of Refugio.In the yearling quarter horse class, John J. O’Brien of Refugio won first, third, and fourth prizes, with O. W. Cardwell of Junctiontaking second.King Ranch entries carried off all the prizes in the suckling class.The Palaminos of Hal Petersonof Kerrville took first and second places in their class, with the entry of Ed Linkenhoger of Corpus Christi third, and the Palamino shown by Heard and Heard of Refugio, fourth.The yearling Palaminos of Homer Johnson, of Corpus Christi, and Heard and Heard, of Refugio, won first and second places, respectively, in their class.The Palamino mare exhibited by Hal Peterson, of Kerrville, placedfirst and that of Heard and Heard of Refugio second in this class.The standard bred horse of Ed. E. A. Keyes, Civilian Components Officer. Eighth Corps Area, and addressed to J. F. Ellis, county chairman for CM-TC enrollment.Col. Keyes thanks all county chairman for their loyalty in performing a distinct service to the country during the past years when thousands of young men received the CMTC training each year. And Rocky’s new-found Kingsville friends are pulling for the speedy recovery of a grand guy.Tie-down roping contests engaged about the best 25 tie-downartists ever assembled in South Texas, including two girls, Mecca and Sue Savage of Alpine. The ropers entered did not all show before the audience, at least 12vin, Ferguson and Don Kayne finished in the order named.Walter Ernest of Tuscon.
