When he is not under Ford s direction, he is a poor anor. But when he goes back into th» Ford fold he turns in consistently good performancesIn ‘She Wore a Yellow* Ribbon he is nothing *hort of auperb. Itis a performance that »hould, in allright, be a challenger for the Academy award. He dominates thefilm from beginning to end, as an elderly Army captain in the day* following Custer's defeat who is due to retire in a few day» after the picture opens. He goes on his last patrol, fads in his mission; then, in his last few* hours in the Army, averts a large scale Indian war. There is a romance between Joanne Dru. niece of the commanding officer, George O'Brien, and two lieutenants. John Agar and Harry Carey Jr, but that is incidental. It is Wa.vn* all the wav through which, in view of his very ordinary act ng m other films not directed by Ford een onlv mean tha* it i* Ford. So this department salutes John Ford for an excellent film and for making John Wayne actThe picture has flaws, one of th* m be eng that the patrol sequence is too long, and another that the ending is too convenient, needing some explanation where there isnone.Victor McLaglen, as Wayne's top sergeant is held down by Ford so th u he doey not mug all over the place and, consequently, is welcome comedy relief, as it is sometimescalled in pictureland Ben Johnson who was last seen in Austin inErtch von Stroheim that “he can make a fence post act. Move over.Von, you've got company—one John Ford. The writing is very good, but that is to be expected with Laurence Stallings having been one of the two writers of the screenplay.
