I will tell of some of these. There was the Leach family! I laugh to inyself as 1 think of that tribe. There were three brothers the eldest named William, i don’t remember the names of the others. They were genuine English, right from London itself. They were educated men but in the opiuion of Bugtowners no greener men ever li ved. They knew absolutely nothing about country life. Theynever saw corn growing uow knewnothing about making a garden. The Grot spring they borrowed a team and plow to break up their garden. All the population of the town watched them. And such a show was neverseen there before. The time DanKlee's circus camped down by the creek over Sunday wasn’t a circumstance to this performance. They put the collars on the horses upside down and lied the hames at the top! They ail worked and at last got the old horse hitched up. Then one led the horse, another whipped and the third held the plow handles! They didn’t know enough to plow a “land” but ran across the lot any old way. The Lugtovvners laughed until they nearly had pleurisy when Uncie Bud Britton went over and look charge. lie harnessed the horses properly and showed them how to plow. And they looked on Uncle Bud as if he must be a wonderful man. They raised a Dock of six guineas until the fowls were nearly grown, when they concluded one day to have guinea for dinner. They borrowed an old army musket and opened fire on the guinias, but they didn't know any more about a gun than they did a plow, and as a consequence the guineas took to the fence, tall weeds and people a-round bunted safe hiding places. At last Geo. Graddy left his Cooper shop and went to their relief. He loaded up the old musket and fired one shot killing all six of the guineas! Again the Bugtowners laughed while the Londoners looked puzzeled and solemn. But the Leach boys were no fools if they were green. But they had a hobby and rode it furiously. They tried to make a wonderful spinning machine. They would teach school during winter and work on their machine in the vummer. They kept this up for years. They made and remade the machine over and over again. It wouldn't work but they never became discouraged. f saw them change the size of one wheel so many times that I asked one day how many times they bad changed the size of it and the answer was, “’more times than there are day9 in the year.” Bugtowners finally put them down as cranks who were object9 of pity for wasting their time on a crazy machine. But little did they care, but went on experimenting. Just when they left f do not remember. Years passed. I was no longer a youth. I was in St. Louis and visited the great exposition hall where all kinds of m ichinery was exhibited. 1 saw a crowd of people around a machine.ProminSaysG*s-ighred:*k». in;cbviTlist1 *-n u r-ive'te-ii tyere • ofevs*veri of I he vas act ofitv-*IVS.lierar-indritbtheuldtheLouis\ seph Co gene^ ai builder faced str Louisvi! A gentleman finely dressed operated the machine easily by turning a small crank. After watching it a moment I thought it looked familiar. I looked at the operator and it struck me that i ought to know him. I didn’t think long -f didn't have to. It all came back like a liash—the operator was one (if the Leach boys and the beautiful machine was the crazy thing we Bugtowners had laughed at. I walked over and gave the operator a whack on the back. To my surprise he remembered me at once. We had a great visit and talked over old Bug-town times. But I was most interested in his story of what had happened afterward. At last they perfected the machine and it made them a fortune As I left him I wondered who were the “greeuies” after ail—we Bugtowners or the three queer Londoners. Can In has set i paigns? the para losis cir these cblt; New Liar diet that those of margin. The efi on Wee weeks ez Both tin berculos busy for inary wc paign ar and Nat that the those of Whilethroughin the co sold, loc an even in excess The re. ferenco c lis. whic berculos states, h terested soy coun interestRed Groyear tnoi berculos tv.
