Eventually she learned to read by braille, went to college, became a famous author and lectured internationally. I wonder what she could have accomplished had she been able to sec and hear like you and me.A television ad shows a young woman defending herself successfully against two martial arts assailants. She leaves the scene by unfolding a white cane and lapping her way down the street. She has learned to defend herself by listening.In Mark 10 we read the story of Bartimaeus, a blind beggar sitting by the roadside listening until he hears the sound he has been waiting for,the sound of a passingRabbi named Jesus.Bartimaeus throws off his cloak and springs up to meet Jesus.Bartimaeus’ story has several levels of meaning. At the simple, literal level we see a man who has heard about Jesus, has believed what he heard, and has waited a long time for the chanceof a lifetime, that Jesus would be passing by in his world of darkness.Imagine what joy dawned in his heart as he heard the voices, the footfalls coming nearer. Barimacus was so sure in his faith that he threw off his cloak and sprang toward Jesus. Imagine how many nights he must have clutched that coat tohimself for security andwarmth. Imagine that leap of faith! Imagine how lie must for so long have uuarded this cloakthoughtsto ponderin an age when people like himself had no means of support but begging for scraps. Imagine the long-awaited light filling his eyes in a miraculous Hash!What followed leads us to deeper reflection. Bartimaeus left everything else and followed Jesus. When you and I receive our spiritual eyesight we are ready to follow Jesus rejoicing. But, like Bartimaeus, we first need to call out, Jesus. Son of David, have mercy on me!” This simple prayer is found when the lepers cry out Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” (Luke 17:13) andwhen the lax collector pleads God, be merciful to me. a sinner” (18:13). That simple phrase used to be the core of an ancient prayer called the' Jesus Prayer”. It originated in Eastern Christianity and is described in a Russian book The Way of the Pilgrim.The “Jesus Prayer” came about because a man wanted to learn a simple prayer he could repeat over and over, even as he went about his daily work. “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.” This simple prayer is a perfect profession of faith. By saying it we are confessing our sinfulness, crying our for God’s mercy, and asking for God's direct intervention in our lives (from The Word Among Us, October 2003)...The story of Bartimaeus inspires in us more than just a perfect prayer. In the very situation described we have a challenge. Our worldtoday has many, many sitting by the roadside listening, waiting, praying for those footsteps of Jesus to come along. Some have waited a long, long lime in the dark. That’s where you and I come in.We are the hands and feet of Jesus. We are his voice and even his presence. Adam Hornung (Clifford the Big Red Dog). 7 and 8 yrs.: 1. AliciaMcKenzie (butlerfiy),2. Sydney Mickelson (princess), 3. Lathan McKinney (Dracula). 11 and 12 yrs.: 1. Cally Stcphanow (Legally Blonde). 13 and 14 yrs.: I. Brittney Stephanow (Monster). Adults who dressed up and received a round of applause were Dcloris Cockerill, Sandra Stephanow, Patti Klassen, and Carolyn Deneka.The children played games where they broke balloons with darts,district newsmerridaleGladys Ludwig, Correspondentplayed musical chairs (Daniel Scott - winner) and then picked an apple from a box. Four of the apples had pumpkin laces on them. Those who picked these apples were Brittney Stephanow, Jayce Myslichuk, CobyCockerill and Debbiq Beck - each receiving a prize. There was also a game of unwrapping a prize for younger ones.Dane Cockerill won the door prize. Other prizes were donated by M.C.C., C.K. Feedlot, C.F. Livestock, Violet Styba, SandraStephanow, ShirleyHarambura, DebbieBeck, Merry Mountain Rentals. These prizes were won by Noreen Balabuck, Kennedy Stephanow, Nathan Cockerill, Deloris Cockerill, VernaSanders, ChrisCockerill, Marsha Chanin, Kara Ludwig. Sydney Mickelson, Jenny McKenzie, Dane Cockerill, EmilyEastman, JayceMyslichuk, Joan Funk, Russel!
