Until this year, organizers scrounged up a tree each year. This year’s event is Dec. 5.Having a tree in place growing bigger each year, is a relief to Shirley Rowser, of Syracuse, and Mary Grace Bialo-breski, of Liverpool, driving forces behind the event. Bialo-breski likes the symbolism of a permanent tree and hopes to see it dedicated to the founder of the annual tree lighting ceremony — South Side busi-“It's getting harder and harder as Jar as finding money and donations and the time considerationMary Grace Bialobreskinessman Charles Dozier III, who died unexpectedly in 2000.Each neighborhood TNT group has about $4,000 to use for projects, and the Southside 3 TNT group decided to buy a tree for the ceremony, said Ba-bette Baker, TNT coordinator for the city.The group didn’t want organizers to have to scramble for a tree, as they did last year, when budget problems prompted the city cut its support for neighborhood tree-lighting events. The library is a relatively new partner iq the celebration, which began 14 years ago.The celebration includes Christmas gifts for children 10 years old and younger, but only for families who register in advance. Registration is underway and will continue through Nov. 23, Parents may register their children at Beauchamp or at the Key Bank South Side branch, also at South Salina and Colvin streets. Key Bank is a major sponsor of the tree lighting event.Between 300 and 400 children receive gifts each year, Rowser said. To donate a gift, call Rower at 469-4576.Rowser and Bialobreski said the volunteers who have kept the tree lighting alive over the years are considering turning it over to the Southside Community Coalition after this year.iiaiilcThe coalition is a partnership between the neighborhood and Syracuse University.“It’s getting harder and harder as far as finding money and donations and the time consideration,” Bialobreski said.Organizers will present community service awards at the ceremony and there will be caroling and children’s activities. Also, organizers will award the Charles Dozier III Memorial Scholarship to a Syracuse high school student.
