OEWICH SUN, TUESDAY ETwo Colgate Students Are Rotary SpeakersProfessor Gates Assists in Putting on Excellent ProgramPresident Zur Craine of Norwich Rotary introduced John Richer as local chairman of the international r. lations committee at the luncheon held at The Chenango hotel Tuesday noon Mr. Richer had planned an unusually interesting program, and in turn Introduced Professor Gates of Colgate universityProfessor Gates stated that he had spoken frequently at the j luncheons of the local Rotary Club as successor to Dr. Moore. But upon this occasion. Professor Gates brought along with him two Colgate students who were to do the speaking for him, He first introduced Yoichi Okamoto, a Japanese student whose home is in Scarsdale Mr Okamoto, refrained from speaking on the Jap-anese-Chinese problems and confined his remarks to the troubles of the Colgate football squad, and also told in a very pleasing manner some of the incidents of the Japanese earthquake of 1924 in which 160,000 Japanese lost their livesMr Okamoto stated that almost all his life had been spent in the United States ,as the family home Is now at Scarsdale, and that his father is an importer and exporter Professor Gates stated that the senior Okamoto exports from this country the higher quality of American products and imports the best of manufactured articles from Japan The young man speaks English fluently and has an excellent vocabulary His talk was given entirely without notes, and he stated that he had been in New York over the weekend and that he bad not taken time to prepare any set talk. Nevertheless it was well delivered and interesting throughoutIn introducing the second speaker. Professor Gates presented another Colgate student in the person of Hans Baare-Schmidt, who Is now in his first year at the Hamilton Institution by arrangement with Germany, whereby a student of Colgate gets training in Germany while a German student Is sent to Colgate for the same purpose Mr Barre-Schmldt resides near Hamburg and is evidently one of the brilliant students taking advantage of training in an American university His discussion of the Germap problems was in reality a highlight of the Rotary riveting Although he has been in this country less than three months he speaks excellent English, although it is somewhat broken and the accent is distinctly GermanPresident Craine announced that ladies’ night will be observed November 23, and he urged all members to plan to attend R L Hogue introduced Jack Wilcox and Robert Collins as the two high school students who will be ' guests of Rotary for the month e of November President Craine ? introduced the following guests John B Cheney and John Shepler a of Oxford, Russell Gray of Greene,D A.
