Ray Howard Leads BengalsTo Strong Spot in Big OneBillings — The Helena High cross-country-team finishedrunnerup to a depth-heavy Butte Public team Saturday at Billings in the first State Cross-Country Meet held.Butte ran up a total of 40 points to Helena's 87 on the strength of third, fourth, and fifth finishers.Helena's lone plocer in the top ten was Ray Howard with an eighth place finish.Chuck Stodden of Anaconda won the event with a time of 10:39.8.TcI(The official Class A finish was as follows: 1, Butte Public, 2 Helena, 3 Billings Sr., 4 Great Falls, 5 Billings West, 6 Laurel, 7 Glasgow.A small Class C town, Ash-\land, won the Class B title,placing three in the first five finishers. Clifford Foote of Ashland won the race.Helena’s second place finish came as a result of Howard’s eighth place finish, Lee Smith in 15th, Bruce Lofale in 18th, Jim Typolt in 19th and Francis Njor-oge in 27th.There v/ere 54 entrants in the Class A race.Class A finishers were: 1, Stodden (Anaconda); 2, Brady (Great Falls); 3, Davie (Butte); 4, Po-lich (Butte); 5, Chamberline (Butte); 6, Collins (Billings senior); 7, Ershman (Billings Senior); 8, Howard (Helena); 9, Kanduch (Anaconda); 10, Hew-son (Great Falls).Coach Bill Gilbert of Helena High said he was pleased with the position. “Our two last kickers (Bill Tobin and Chris Alke placed 34th and 35th respectively ) may have made the difference between second and third.”“I think this meet in particular is really going to give this sport | a boost,” Gilbert said.I«r plod dads a tw to le vage in a lead.ThIowaelect touci third Snoc inchlt; sixth On rolleFigh ting IrishScuttle Navy
