Debutantes Dance To I, Offer Diversion To Service Men 1MOBILE, Ala , Mat 30~lt;*»-The J first conquest by Uncle Sam's new soldiers in Dixie has been Mobile society, exclusive set since this gull city was founded bv the French innil.Young selective service soldiers and national guardsmen from Camp ; Shelby, Miss., and Fort McClellan, Ala, are being entertained each j week-end by 400 Mobile society girls —debutantes, Mardi Gras belles and : Azalea queens—organized as dancers for democracy,”The lassies, who identify them- j selves as Mars Girls” from initiate of the Mobile Army Recreation Service, entertain 500 visiting soldiers weekly at Saturday night dances.Military LinesThe girls function on military lines divided into three battalions with commanding officers'' (chaperones) who announce all* functions ir communique from and accompany the girls to and from dances.To add interest, sailors also are invited.The Mars girls, on their own word, are so enthusiastic for the military' dances that the hometown swains are forced to take a back seat during week-ends.Dances are not the only diversion afforded the soldiers. A woman’s committee furnishes transportation for sightseeing trips. The soldiers are taken to private homes for dinner. They go to church with members of Mobile’s oldest families. They are taken swimming, fishing and yachting.No Date AllowedThe girls are not allowed dates ; with the soldiers for dances and ! must stay on the dance floor throughout the program But regulations don’t cover dates for Sunday afternoons.The experiment in morale work has attracted attention of authorities of the army and the United Service Oirganizations.Recreation camps were established experimentally in seven gulf cities and so hearty has been the reaction to Mobile’s hospitality that Major Clyde B Leasure, in charge of recreational work here, reports the army plans similar recreation camps in the East.* The entertainments here are sponsored by the Mobile Woman's Committee for Home Defense, the Military and Naval Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Commerce end the WPA reoeration service* Mrs. G.
