For Pecos residentsDirect long distance dialing set tomorrowPecos area residents and customers of Continental Telephone Co. will be dialing long distance calls faster and much easier with the new electronic switching machine being handled by Continental Telephone of Texas starting tomorrow.Telephone users will just dial “1” plas the area code (if different from ones own) plus the phone numberdesired to route long distance calls into the new equipment.“The conversion is the beginning of a massive changeover within the Continental System from traditional mechanical switching to the faster and more reliable electronic equipment,” said Ron Ethridge, Continental Telephone’s Customer Services Manager in Pecos.Engineers and technicians will be working most of tonight to insure that all circuits are ready to be shifted to the new equipment early tomorrow morning.Numbers for local telephone services will also be changing at the same time with the new “1 plus” dialing system. Diectory assistance is being changed to 1 plus 411. Telephone troubles will be reported at 1 plus 611.The time and Pecos temperature recorded announcement will also have a new number. The recordingmay be heard by dialing 1 plus 844-1212. The new “844” prefix will be used exclusively for time andwtemperature, a free call.Most individuals dialing long distance calls will bebilled automatically.
