This cast rather a damper on the finishing up of the proceedings. The programme commenced with the PACING RACE—3 IN 5,in which there were four entries, but only three to start, Kennedy having withdrawn his “Stranger.” It had been expected that Hockey’s pacer from Turtle Mountain would have been in the race, but he only arrived in the city on Monday morning. ' Considerable money would have changed hands had he arrived in time.In the first heat Smith’s Rowdy was distanced, and Dickinson’s Harry Phillips came in an easy winner by several lengths. Little Mike though pressed him close on the home'stretch. The second heat in the race was.given to Little Mike, Harry Phillips having run under the wire. The thira and fourth heats and the race were won by Harry Phillfps. Both these horses make excellent drivers, and with a harder track, would make good time :SUMMARY.12 3 4Smith’s black g, Howdy, dis. 0 0 C Power’s brown g, kittle Mike, 2 10 0 Dickinson’s far. g, II. Phillips, 12 11 THE TROTTING RACE 3 IN 5.'• Considerable interest was centered iu this race, and there were four entries, all starting. In the first heat they got a‘fair start. Duncan’s Long John having choice of position, took the inside track and the lead. This he kept all the way, closely followed by Griggs’ Frank, who seemed determined to catch him if he could. White’s sorel mare Gipsev Maid followed in the procession, and was, of course in a good position to see how the other two conducted themselves. Riley’s \Yuubeesh Maid skipped after the leaders in a fashion, her driver not being able to keep her down. She came iu fourth. They passed under the wire in the order in which they left.Iu the second heat, the four horses started. Grigg's Frank, however, doing badiy. He made up at the quarter pole, and took second place, doing excellent work. He kept at it, pushing Long John, who kept the start from the first, for front position for all he was worth. The big horse though caine in with flying colors, not Laving made a miss in the entire distance, while Gipsev tried hard for second place, and kept at it with a will. Torrance’s Fanny, Meredith’s Paddy, Moody’s Nelly, and Smith’s Billy. After considerable manoeuvring, the horses showing us much life as a drove of three-vear-old’s, a capital start was made, Nelly taking the lead, with Fanny in hot pursuit, Billy and Little Tip were anxious to be in the race, but they had chosen bad company, for Telegraph and Paddy had gone into partnership, with the full intention of leaving out the crowd. They were assisted iu this by Nelly bolting at the quarter pole, and throwing Fanny out cf all calculation iu the race. Paddy kept the lead until they approached on the home stretch. Here Nelly took spirit and worked ahead, but the zebra-jacketed rider of Telegraph placed him at work, and, with a few well-directed strides, carried his gigantic body ahead, despite all Nelly and Pncldys’ efforts, and Telegraph, who may he anywhere between seventeen and twenty hands high, was awarded first place in the heat, being two lengths ahead at the close. When in motion tlii* quadruped, an eye-witness avers, looked like a small tng-boat just arrived from a storm, with the funnel awry. What is meant by this we leave for our nautical readers to conclude. In this heat Fanny was given third place, owing to the foul by Nelly. All the horses showed up in the second heat. A good start was had, Telegraph first, Paddy second, and Fanny in her third position. Fanny got the start, and run well, keeping her advan-taro until, after having passed the quarter pole, she took to the ditch, and could not be xersuadcd from it. At the gate, Nelly and Billy left the track, and Little Tip took the third place. Paddy led all the way, but on the home stretch, the tug boat came on, aud as Gibson put, “ lie'll bring up in good time.” He did. too. and pas-ed the wire post a stride or two ahead of the Irishman. This heat decided the race, and the following summary shows the result:SUMMARY.'1 2Telegraph............1 3Paddy..................2 2Fannv ...............3 0Nelly ..................0 0Little Tip............0 3Little Tip took third mo*:ey owing to Fanny and Nelly having been disbaucod THE PONY RACE.A genuine pony race will always draw a crowd.
