THE RACE COURSE.Brandon can boast of a Turf Club comprising some of the most honorable gentlemen of the city, and whose object we are convinced is to raise the ring to an eminence iu the minds of the people here above that whic'i it generally occupies. From the manner in which the proceedings were conducted on Saturday last, the iuaugurative meeting of the Association, this bids fair to become a popular institution. The weather was all that could he desired. 1 he track being new, was a trifle slow, bat considering that the season has commenced so early. aurl the committee in charge had so little time, it was surprising that it was in such goed shape. This is only to be accounted for by the manner in which Mr. J Brown and Engineer Brownlee worked, they having devoted most of the time tor the past few days in getting it into shape. The sports would have been much more interesting had the Association or some enterprising individual got out a few hundred 41 racing cards,*' giving the names of the horses, their owners, age, weight, c, They would have sold readily at five cents each. As it was there were very few knew to whom the hors°s belonged, and consequently a good deal of the zest and enjoyment of the racing was lost. Of course this beiDg the first meeting of the Club, it could not be expected that every little etcetera appertaining to one of some years' standing would be forthcoming. There were, we should judge upwards of a thousand people present, and over a hundred carriages to do honor to the occasion, the fair sex being present in large numbers. The racing throughout was extiemely good, and but for an accident in the last heat of the pou}~ race all would have- gone off without the slightest hitch. The rider of the winning pony of two previous heats was badly thrown dislocating his shoulder,The fourth should have* decided the race, but Duncan, who now' took ihe outside of the ring with a coo lucres scarcely ever witnessed on the turf, under like circumstances, seemed resolved to have heaps of fuu, and after letting Frank and Gipsy uec away, followed, and passing them in about twenty rods, fouled both, and took the inside truck and the lead. . This lie kept, with Frank's nose at his wheels the entire distance. Gipsy followed iu very nice style. Long John and Frank passed under the wire neck and head, the bay baviug pressed his length}’ companion closely 'JU approaching home. Again was John put dowu foot for misconduct of which he was individually innocent, In the fifth heat, Frank having the insiue track, Gipsy center, and the big horse eutside, a magmficeut start was had. As was appaient from the start, it was not a difficult matter jfor Long John to^keep his feet aud cake first place, but it seemed a more difficult one for his driver to place him there without doing something that would injure the horse's credit. He was doing some good work, and in tune would legitimately have taken first place, but he again fouled his companions. As a consequence he Was put back, and ihj first money given to Frank, second to Gipsev, and third to Long John.summary.1 2 3 4 5Frank .................. 2 2 111Gipsey.................. 3 3 2 2 2Long John ............ 1 13 3 3* Waubeesh Maid...:.. 4 disfc.RUNNING RACE.When was the time when a running race did not captivate, On such an occasion, you forget all about old time and the cares he brirgs, your whole beiug is animation, and there is an intensity that is tryiug and that lasts from beginning to end. In the running race, there were six entries, and six to start. Smith’s Billy was in the pacing race, but was distanced, and iu the running race he expected to win laurels. He wras disappointed.
