Soulsville, San AntonioAn old theater building in eastern San Antonio is springing back to live action.The old Bits Hall, 72S Iowa St., is now the Soulsville U.S.A.-Club and will be ringing with action every weekend.Theadics McCall, a y o u n g Negro artist from New York who has adopted San Antonio as his home, is the mayor of Soulsville U.S.A.Other town officers — financial backers of the club— are Crosby Brown, free lance photographer, city counselor; Flip Forrest, radio station disc jockey, city advisor; and J.J. Zerda, finance company official, city manager.The idea for a Soulsville” was kicked off in -January, when McCall conducted his first talent show for young people in the area,“They needed something like this to keep them off the streets, give them something to do,” McCall said, referring to the Negro young people.He described the '‘gang leaders*’ in eastern San Antonio as boys with nothing to occupy their time. “They’re net really bad,” he added, noting most of these leaders'already have expressed interest or are actively participating in “town*1 events.About 250 persons at1 ended that first talent session. By the time the third show rolled around about three months later, some 1,700 persons were present in the audience, he said.stage with ramp, circular dance floor surToundcd with individual tables, entertainers’ lounge and balcony.The club will swing with music each Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A disc jockey-type format will rule the hall from 7 to 8 p.m.. dancing will be featured until 9 p.m., a floor show will be on until 10:30 p.m. and the evening will be rounded out with dance contests until 11:30 p.ra,AH performers at the shows will be Negro talent — the best picked from talent shows conducted each Sunday at 3 p.m.This talent also w*)l be available for bookings at local and out-of-town engagements, McCall said, “Lots of local groups, especially schools, want Negro tolent for lheir programs, but they doiTt know where to find 1L Now, they can come to us,” he added.The dub will be open for memberships only, but will not be limited to any maximum or minimum age, McCall Said. Parents escorting teen-agers are invited in free.
