The Umbrella/Covers NothingBy JACK GAVERNEW YORK (UPI)—“The Umbrella, last night’s arrival at the off-Broadway Bouwerie Lane Theater, is another of those earnest symbolical dramas about what is wrong with everything that illuminates nothing.that lets everyone take away his own version of what is supposed to be going on. About the best I can make of it is that the sham of make-ebUeve isn’t any better than the sham of real life for which it is meant to compensate. The most dramatic moment, perhaps, is near the end when Jan Farrand, who has spent most of the two acts in a nun’s habit, strips down to little more than a smile and you wonder if she’s going to lose that. There is one thing to be said for the authors. They do come up with some sharp and humorous lines oftener than have theauthors of other similar enigmas lately.4THE AUTHORS are BertrandCastelli and Jack Raphael Guss. The presentation of the play cleared up one mystery at least -why it was scheduled for Broadway a few seasons back with Geraldine Page starred and then was quietly left in some place such as Philadelphia after a few performances. There are three characters, rhe setting is something de signed by Jack Lindsay tha looks like an abandoned junk yard. These three seem to b the last persons left after some sort of holocaust. They are first presented as a former business tycoon, a nun and a war hereIt turns out that none actual!, is as described. J. D. Cannon, who is boss of this establishment, was a servile bookkeeper. Miss Farrand was a brothel inmate and Reni Santoni was a wartime coward.THIS IS another one of those who’s-on-first sort of dramas6:206:307:008:008:309:009:3010:0010:2510:3010:4511:0011:3012:0012:301:001:251:302:00Farm and Ranch Roundup Sunriie Semester Captain Kangaroo CBS News— M.
