Thomas and Elvina came up to Bureau county in the spring of 1833, and homesteaded in Sec. 6 and 7, 3 miles north of Dover, in Berlin Township.Ttiey bought their farm from thegovernment on July 15, 1839.This farm is now known as the Michael Coffey farm and is presently owned by Miss Ann Coffey. In over 125 years, this farm has oijly been in two family names. Thomas J. Cole first built a log cabin here, later building a better home. The home burned in 1860 and was rebuilt on the same foundation. One barn, still has the solid walnut beams, which he hewed out of surrounding trees. Here they raised their family. Their children were:William, born in Springfield; Catherine, Julia, John L., Albert B., Thomas J.
