Eight lettermen buoy Hurley nineComing off a 19-11 record and returning eight letter winners, John Sawicki’s Hurley high school baseball team has high hopes entering the 1989 season.With a relatively young squad last season, the Midgets captured the Western Upper Peninsula League tourney title and took the WIAA sectional crown, before losing in the title game of regionalplay.Back for another year are three seniors, including a fine pitcher-oufcfielder in Barry Wieklund. Also returning are Keith Smith (infield) and DuWayne Haniskc (pitcher, outfield, infield).The five juniors returning are: Tim Huotari (catcher, outfield). Drew Christopherson (catcher, outfield), Fred Tijan (infield, outfield, pitcher), Jason Jokipii (pitcher, infield, outfield) and Chris Rowe (pitcher, infield, outfield).Others vying for positions on the team are: sophomores — Cory Wieklund (infield, outfield), David Morzenti (catcher, outfield), Mickey Herala (first base, outfield), Brad Baron (outfield), Paul Pretti (pitcher, outfield), A1HanBon (infield, outfield), Cory Bergquist (infield), Dan Moncher (outfield), and Bob Constantini (outfield).The Midgets will be involved in a heavy 28-game schedule, including games with Lumberjack Conference foes, in addition to regular league games with Western Upper Peninsula Baseball League opponents.If the Midgets are successful in the two tournaments they will enter, they will have participated in 33 games by season’s end.SCHEDULE:May 25 — Ironwood (doubleheader), home.May 30 — Lakeland (doubleheader, away.Juno 1 —Tomahawk, away.J uno 3 — Aahland, away.June 6 — Park Falls (doubleheader), home.
