Free Band Concerts to Begin Here June 30; ' Paul Kern Starts Twelfth Year as DirectorSummer Series to include 18 ProgramsPaul A. Kem. beginning his 12th year as director of the Zanesville Memorial band, today announcedthat the annua! summer concert series wiii open or Sunday afternoon.June 30. atparse.The series this rear will includeIS concerts. Toe band programs will be presented or Sunday afternoons at Putnam Kill park and on Friday evenings in McLotire park.Kern directs the band of 35 musicians and prepares the programs from a'musical library of rr.ore than 500 numbers. The concerts are interspersed with popularmusic, light opera, novelty arrangements and vocal selections. Kern explained that the concert programs are arranged so as to appeal to ail types of persons :n theaudience.The Memorial Concert Band Association was organized in 1923 under the provisions of a trust fund established by the late Eaton Drone and John Hoge. Kern bought a trumpet as a youth and . is self-taught.In the summer of 1907 the Tth regiment band of Zanesville was ; invited to play at the National guard band encampment at Strasbourg. G. Ke felt it a great, honor .at that time to be invited to play a trumpet solo before a group of musicians well known throughout the United States, i Because of the lack of indoor facilities the Zanesville Memorial ; band discontinues its concert se-j ries during the fall and winter sea-! sons.
