Whitlock Awarded Doubtful Judges’ Decision In Fight With Hinton; Burchett WinsBy COUNT PULASKIDon Whitlock, Dublin siocker, was awarded a doubtful judges decision last night over “Pug” Hinton. Hendersonville, N. C\, scrapper, at the conclusion of their 10-round battle in The Times gym.Hinton, the aggressor throughout and as clean a puncher as has been seen, here in many a day, had a weight and reach advantage over Whitlock.Decision UnpopularThe judges decision, which was2-1 for Whitlock, was unpopular with the fans. The Times sports writer, Count Pulaski, voted for Hinton with the hope that tihe fight would be called a draw. The main go, topping off a card that was saved only by a good exhibition on the part of “Swede” Peterson, of Hendersonville, and Young Burchett, of Pulaski, was fast and furious. The first two rounds were about even with Whitlock laying back and Hinton parrying for openings, Hinton took the third with a rush and series of punches as he caught Whitlock’s face open on the ropes. The fourth round went to Whitlock who landed his only real punches of the fight in this frame. Hinton stopped one of the blows with his nose, blood pouring profusely for several rounds but the damage didn’t phase the big boy.The fifth round saw Hinton warding off Don’s blows and landing several good punches. The sixth was even but Hinton came back in the seventh to add more points on the score sheet.Swap AdvantageThe seventh wias also even, both fighters giving their best with good in-fighting. Whitlock was the aggresso-r in the eighth and Hinton was good for theninth. At the start of 'the last round, Whitlock asked extra time to have a glove tied, but Hinton didn’t favor the delay and Don went into the fray without hesitation. Whitlock took the final round on speed and aggressiveness but Hinton was still cool and going easy at the bell. The battle royal was tame but the dusky sockers were rewarded with a shower of coins.Bill Ferguson, of Pulaski, and Kid Ice Cream, Koanoke, staged a lovefeast with neither boxer exerting himself. The judges rightfully called it a draw andxhc ring was cleared.Save Prelim CardBuster Horton, who was to have met Jack O’Hara, of Charleston, who didn’t show up, was pitted with Bob Surratt, of Dublin, and after a round and a half, was awarded a technical knockout.Surratt, out of condition, hopelessly outclassed, should never have been matched with the com- , ing Horton.Young Burchett and Peterson staged a pretty exhibition. Older and more experienced, Burchett outclassed his opponent and couldhave scored a knockout exceptthat he showed rare sportsmanship . in the last two rounds, hoi ding his ’ punches rather than damage his young, game adversary. The fight drew deserved applause.Whitlock was out of his weight • class last night but put up a slam bang fight. He takes them as they come and made many friends , by his game exhibition.A return bout under different conditions would pack them in. We hope to see the two scrappers : matched again.]]ctI12It\\00fcthsevbca
