Come Off It, StevewAnother city council matter which deserves a few words of comment concerns the authority of the mayor.Last Monday Mayor S. A. Magnacca suddenly flared up when Aid. G. D. Box challenged his authority to decide what council members can and cannot tell the public.The rather ugly and unnecessary incident, which revealed Mr. Magnacca’s dictatorial streak, occurred when the mayor insisted that ail releases to the public must be first cleared by him personally. The target of his wrath was city engineer H. R. Akehurst who published a brief survey of his department's activities in the last issue of ‘Spotlight.’ Aldermen Box and James Creighton rose in defence of the eitv engineer and protested vehemently when the mayor extended his censure to council members.There is, Mr. Magnacca, no place for a Caesanan complex on a city council in a democratic countrv. Please bear in mind that vouv vpreside over a body of elected representatives whom you can neither hire, fire or order around.
