A total solar eclipse will occur June 20 over a narrow strip of the Eastern Hemisphere, but will not be visible from any location on the American continents. According to astronomers, it will have the longest totality phase of any eclipse since the year 717, beginning in the Indian Ocean and extending east across Ceylon, Bangkok, part of the Philippines, and the Pacific Ocean north of the Solomon Islands, as shown on map at bottom. Diagram at top shows the different types of solar eclipses varying with the observer's distance from the path of the total eclipse.
