A person of the name of “P.” has been writing to the Boston Iranscript, at great length, of the Cincinnati May- Festival. His favorite solo singer was Mrs. 8mith, though he very highly estimates Miss Cary. He seems to regard the presence of the half-dozen solo singers from Boston as a matter suggestive, if not remarkable In character. He mentions that Miss Buchanan, “the sprightly critic” of the Chicago Times, was “near dead Vith fatigue.” We fear the German societies will not fully approve this estimate of their animus and action:“The German societies, of which there are .twelve or more, have stood aloof, although quite a large number of individual members of these societies have come forward and given their valuable assistance. There was too much of American ideas in the management to suit the Germans. They have an annual Saengerfest of their own, the management of which expresses their ideas. They delight in flags, evergreens, street processions, jovial receptions and plenty of leer. The managers of the May Festival, at the start, put their veto on all this sort of thing. Then the Germans wanted the words of the great choruses, which are worthy *of German origin, in their native language, and they must have beer furnished in the refreshment halls, neither ot which propssitions the managers would consent to. Some of the German papers have spoken of the Festival as a Puritan affair, a Praise-the-Lord-Barebones occasion, a Calvinistic service; and some Germans
