FROM MY WINDOWinJoyland ParkWhat does summer havein store for you?I have no idea how mv•/summer will unfold. Summer's not the same without Joyland Park. I don't remember much about the park on Paris Pike in Lexington. It's a subdivision now, I think. It was founded sometime in the late 1920s or earlv 1930s and closed in the very late 1960s or very early 1970s.I remember my motheri/and father talking about it.They once danced to %/Jimmv Dorsey and his Orchestra there. They took me to Jovland the summer before I started first grade and occasionally as I grew up. Our eighth-grade class ended its graduation tr ip at Jovland Park.It had one of the country’s best wooden roller coasters, the Wildcat, on which I never rode. I liked the Dodge’ms — the electric cars that got their power from the floor of the arena by dragging a contact from the bottom andthe ceiling via a contact ona pole extending up from the back of the car.Most people just call them bumper cars.And finally, it had a%* 7swimming pool that looked like it was about the size of a football field. It had two concrete islands in themiddle, one with a diving board in the deep end and the other in the shallowend. There were diving boards from the deck as wellI had lots of opportunities for fun each summer, usually in August because it was beginning to not be so hot by then.About the time I was five we went to NaturalBridge State Park. My first birthday week was spent at Boonesboro before it was astate park.I think most of thoseearly trips were actually for my father. He so enjoyed swimming, amusement parks, history and many ofarl Keith Greenethe things I have enjoyed and still do enjoy as pastimes. He took me to the great cyclorama depicting the battle of Atlanta when I was in eighth grade and then to Gold Rush Junction when the Gatlinburg area was beginning to develop.But we never saw RockCity ^ ' r7‘.Tv'When Vaunene and I married we took off on atrip that took us from Russell Springs to London. Actually, we had a fewstops in between, like Lexington and a carriage ride around the city, a tour of Williamsburg, Va., and a stay-over with a lovely lady in her bed and breakfast.We toured the Harrisburg, Penn, area and stayed at a place called the Mennonite Farm, another bed and breakfast hosted by a lady named Hannah Stoltsfuse.We spent some time on Cape Cod and at Niagara Falls, then headed home through central Ohio.Since then, we've been to San Francisco, San Antonio, back to Williamsburg and June Young’s bed and breakfast two or three times, and lots of other short and long trips.I don't know what’s up for this summer, but with the wife I have. I’m sure it’ll be quite eventful.I just wish Joyland could still be open.Have a good summer and remember the sunscreen.€ MMVIL V.H.
