The LA CROSSE TRIBUNE, La Crosse, WisconsinAlexander Graham Bell, famous inventor, had a part in the founding of La Crosse Oral Day School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and made a special visit to La Crosse 70 years ago in the school’s interest. The school board meeting at which he appeared was held in the former National Bank Building at the southeast corner of Third and Main Sts. A dramatization of this board of education meeting opened the “Pa, Ma and Me Day” of the LaCrosse Oral Day School Friday afternoon, May 10, at the Washburn School Taking the parts were Earl Ruf, left, John Pamperin; Jerrv Ash. Miss Dean, 75, is I now retired and resides in Wauke- j i- sha with a sister, also a retired j », school teacher.☆ ☆ ☆Program theme was “After 70 Years,” the time span from the j openfhg of La Crosse Oral Day School for the Deaf and Hard of I Hearing on April 14, 1887, to the ; present. Dennis Thiele, narrator, j presented Miss Dean with a cor-1 sage.First scene was the La Crosse Board of Education meeting Aug. 30, 1886, in the National Bank Building at the southeast comer of Third and Main streets. Scene two was dated April 14, 1887 when Rilla Parker conducted the first school, her part played by Frances Kain of the present school faculty. Pupils taking part were Duncan Cameron, impersonated by Tommy Chapman, and David Powers, by David McAlear.The school of the 1890s was depicted in the third scene, Miss Kain this time taking the part of Margaret Maywood, a teacher of that decade. In the parts of pupils were Carole Bade, Martha French; Debra Schultz, Frances Kabat; John Anderson, Lester Wells; Stanley Johnson, Walter Hoeckser; Gary Jerome, John Bushey; Bryan Samb, Charles G o o d e 11; Tommy Chapman, Clarke Jenks; Danny Kenyon, Edward Nesting.“How Well I Remember” titled the next scene, in which JuliaDean impersonated herself in her own teaching days here between 1911 and 1914 and in which she reminisced a bit. She told of a trip to the home of Peter Sherr, Liberty Pole, in a shower, during which the “side curtains” were safely tucked away under the back seat.ft ☆ ☆“Newer Methods” had for its cast Mrs. Grace Glenz of the present faculty in the role of Claire Maier, a former teacher; Mary Jo Heisel as Frances Yans-ky; Marilyn Koula as Dorothy Hanchett; Jean Anderson a3 Norma Herold; Marilyn Knoll as Esther Brohelden.Classes of the 40s were represented in “Look and Listen,” in which Nida Saunders of the present faculty impersonated Margaret Bonnell, a former teacher here; Earl Ruf and Roger Hardin took the parts of Lyle Fink and John Furlano.The school as it is today was presented in the play, “Cinderella,” with Marilyn Knoll, narra-tor; Marilyn Koula, Cinderella; ■Mary Jo Heisel, the stepmother;| Jean Anderson and Carol Bade,| her daughters; Jerry Ash and John Hayes, king and prince; Danny Kenyon and John Anderson, court pages; Debra Schultz, ; fairy; Ann W’era, student teach-1 er from Viterbo College, accom-I panist.“Ready for Tomorrow” was given in the original theme, “Robert E. Lee, Gentleman,” by How ! ard Gardner.—Tribane Photo*Julia Dean, former instructor in the La Crosse Oral Day School for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, was the house guest during her stay here of Nida Saunders, 1320 S. 21st St., member of the present school * faculty. Miss Saunders gave a tea for the visitor Saturday afternoon to give her opportunity for renewing acquaintance with La Crosse teachers who formerly taught with her at Washburn._
