HOFFMANlTHE OLD TIME SALOON. — In all the propagandaput out during the halcyon days of the anti-saloon league iit was always the worst part of that institution that was mentioned in connection with the old-time saloon. That there were bad elements of the Institution, just as there are shortcomings among lawyers, doctors and even preachers, goes withou’ saying, but it was the dive and low joint that was continuously paraded before the public as being typical of the whole. There was just as much sense to that as to hold up an erring pastor as reflecting the type of the whole ministry. Among the old time saloon keepers in Spring Valley there wore many fine men and we believe we are safe in saying that the large majority of theirs wore men of high standads, honest and i credit to any community. Of cour-e, there were also types of the kind the prohibition fanatics loved to exploit, who could have been eliminated anytime had it been the will of a city administration. Too often these low types reflected the eharaet rs of the men the people put In office. One of the earliest of our saloon-keepers was Jake Wahl, who ran a place opposite the old Horner House. Jakes place was the rendezvous of o-ur early Germans, Two singing vereins held forth in the hall above his place and every Saturday night there was a dance, the music often furnished by strolling German musicians of the kind so realistically expre--o 1 by the famous
