At The RialtoIf you liked the picture that Helen Hayes made last year, called “The Sin of Madelon Claudet,” you will undoubtedly enjoy “The Strange Case of Clara Deane.”This latest sob'Story of a victim of circumstance is marvelously acted by Wynne Gibson, who did so well with a bit in “Ladies of the Big House.” Married to a worthless, spineless in' dividual, who is, nevertheless, the father of her baby (Cora Sue Collins) Clara Deane decides to stay with him for the sake of her child. While on their way to the country to start life anew, the husband (Pat O’Brien) commits a crime for which both go to jail for sixteen years. When Clara is freed she begins a search for her child, who has been adopted. She finds her finally in a wealthy home; and at that point finds that her hus' band (also free) intends to reveal his identity to the child in order to get money from her. Clara kills him rather than have the child know, but she is lucky this time in having a friend who enables her to go free.I thought the picture well acted anddirected.
