tlOfjai ! TThe Indians in Tama county have been rather unruly in some respects. For several years it was in doubt as to whether they were under the control cf the Indian department or the state. They were disposed to dispute both the authority of the state and nation. The last general assembly gave the United Slates a quit claim to j * all Iowa’s interest in the Indians and now the federal government proposes to make them be good Indians. Heretofore the little Indians have gone to school when they felt like it and stayed away when they didn't want to go, and they would go lo school one day and when the teacher was a little bit cross the little rod men would pick themselves up and go home without any explanation. And there was r.o appropriation for the support of the school, or at least none that amounted to anything. As the result of all these things the Tama county Indians are a dirty, low, filthy set, refusing the overtures of civilization with a desire for nothing modern except forty rod whisky. Now Bob Cousins, who represents the Fifth district in congress, aided by John Gear and William B. Allison 1n the senate, has secured an appropriation of $35,000 for the establishment of an Indian industrial school in Tama county and nothing better has been done by the present congress than the granting of this proposition. Henceforth they can make the Indians go to school. Uncle Sam will be in full charge and there will be no back talk. Those in charge will have the authority lo enforce their regulations.1 c T(Uscrncc
