MILDRED PARKER SEESEWho changed name of Thompson’s Pond?I made a mistake in that Friday column about matinee racing in Goshen, though it didn’t concern the racing itself. But i learned something thereby, and more may yet come to hand. The error was that I credited Robert Goelet, who was a prominent exponent of the matinee programs, with changing the name of Thompson’s Pond to Glen mere. (Please don’t add Lake. It's like adding River to WaUkili.)Mrs. Charles Couser of Florida read the column while she was lunching and relaxing after a morning of gardening (she's only about 77), and reported immediately that it was Glenmere long before Goelet knew the neighborhood. It's been Glenmere as long as she can remember, she said. The only one we could think of who might have a longer memory and more information about it is Fred Green, and he was busy elsewhere when 1 tried to find him.Did the Greens name it Glenmere? It was Sam Green, Fred’s father, who dammed Thompson’s Pond to provide a reservoir and thereby a public water supply for Florida, long before the hamlet became an incorporated village in 1946. Thompson's Pond is the historical name for the water, because it lay within the tract which was early and long in ownership of the Goshen family of that name, but Glenmere was so firmly established in Florida parlance in Mrs. Couser's youth that she had to ask about Thompson’s Pond when one of her elders mentioned it that way.The Thompsons had a mill on the pond's outlet, which is Quaker Creek that wanders through Florida and across the black meadows to the Wall-kill. Their home was the really old gambrel roofed house of the Brozycki family at thefarend of the original road from Goshen, a continuation of Goshen's South Street. People used to know it as the Buttonball Farm for the trees that towered over the house.
