Washington birthday a successW ASHI.NGTON - Last Saturday Washington celebrated her 119th birthday with a day of activities that also commemorated the nation's birthday 200 vears ago.A flag-raising ceremony, directed by Jill Bavles. Chairman of the Bicentennial Celebration, began the events As the Cub Scouts of several Washington troops presented the flag. Rudger McArthur and Leon Watson plaved a march on the fife and snare drum. After the oledge of allegiance, a 13 gun salute was fired by La Von Hall. The crowd of over 100 then sang “The Star Spangled Banner and “Oh. Beautiful for Spacious Skies.Grand Marshall was 98-year-o!d Athole Milne with his 93 year-old wife, Mar.dy, riding in the buggy with him Town officials, county commissioners, and other dignataries followed in cars and buggies The Dixie High Band marched.Washington Third Ward won the grand pnze for entering the float that best depicted the theme. A Saiute to Our Heritage'’. Washington Second Ward took second prize and the City of Washington float won an honorable mentionThe Baby Pageant was a real crowd pleaser as over 60 little bathing beauties paraded across the stage. The little daughter of Debra Sterling was grand prize winner of a photo donated by Lynne Clark Stuuiosand S iker Thulin Contractors.Liberty Essay Winners were announcea at the program which began on the patio at-7:30. Winners and prizes were: Mitzi Bayles - a free gift from LeJean’s Draperies A Accessories: Cindy Bayles - a free hair styling from Huffs Beauty Salon; Eric Lounsbury - a free show ticket for any of the theatres; Milton Bundy - a free dinner at Dixie Chicken; Becky Sullivan - a free hairstyling from Hulet’s Hairdo; Kelli Bayles - a $5 gift certificate from Fuller Brush; Shanna Sullivan - S10 donated by Dr. Jerry Keyes Dixie Lumber.Twenty-four of Washington’s native-born pioneers who are still living in Washington and are 76 years of age or older were honored. A 14 X 16 picture of these people was taken and will hang in the c:tv offices.As the evening really cooled off. many remembered the centennial celebration 19 years age when the temperature was 100 degrees. That year, 1957. the population of Washington was 395 compared to 2.400 today.A CT test June 12CEDAR CITY - The next testing date for the ACT Assessment ;American Collgege Test) will be June 12 at Southern Utah State College. GEORGE - All units of the Bloomington and St George Volunteer Fire Departments answered an alarm at the Western Rock Gravel batch plant southwest of here Sunday evening and saved which could have been a stubborn and destructive fire. An oil and electrical fire which had broken out at the batch plant was extinguished before it spread throughout the whole plant. The quick response was credited with having save what could have been a serious blaze.
