*For a time, Bill and Ruby were managers iand cooks at the Sacramento MethodistAssembly, but they again returned to May-hill, where Bill began a long career with the State Highway Department, retiring in 1969 at age 65. His retirement didn’t last too long, as he took a job as supervisor of the sanitary landfill near Mayhill, where he worked for eight more years.The couple then moved to La Luz in 1987, and Bill passed away May 25,1993, at age 89. He is buried in La Luz. Ruby remains in the home they shared, and now has her son Darrell with her, since her health is not too good and her eyesight is failing due to hardening of the arteries.Her biggest regret is losing the ability to drive, she said.When discussing the hardships she faced in those years, she said she was never aware that life was hard, because everyone lived the same way. No one had money. They walked wherever they went. People raised as much of a garden as they could and lived on venison.IShe remembers a cow was killed whenIthey lived on the Begley place, and Mr. Begley asked them to help can the meat. She said that really involved many hours putting up that whole beef, but die results were really great! They ate every jar of the meat and enjoyed each one.Dr. Shields was a neighbor and cared for the needs of everyone in the mountain area. Ruby’s sister was hit by a car in Avis, and Doc Shields cared for her. He didn’t think she would live through the night but, being a tough teenager, she proved him wrong and, even though her health is not good, she is now 84.For fun, kids played hopscotch, jump rope, hide-and-seek, or made up games. Adults played a lot of cards and dominoes in homes and got together on weekends for picnics and dancing. Some of the neighbors she could remember were Melvin and Jewell Poe, and Jerry and Lillie McCall (Bill had come to New Mexico with theMcCalls.)Bill and Ruby were blessed with three children; Allene and husband Charles Clayton live in Artesia, son Melvin and wife Barbara live in Mayhill, and son Darrell lives in La Luz.They have eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. Ruby’s sister Cassie Boanalso resides in Artesia.
